Whether you’re a seasoned professional or a busy mom (or both, like me!) you are living (and surviving) the Modern Lifestyle. This means your life is bustling, you may not feel your best, and you want want to improve your health and wellness.
You have tried this workout or that massage technique and still haven’t found what you’re looking for. You’re continually curious and looking for holistic and effective ways to relieve stress, pain, and other common ailments. You’ve probably heard of acupuncture, but you’re not sure what it is, how it works, or if it’s right for you. In this blog post, I’ll explain the basics of acupuncture, its benefits, and how, as a Licensed Acupuncturist and Primary Care Provider, we can work together to achieve your health and wellness goals.
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an ancient form of medicine that originated in China over 2,000 years ago. It involves inserting thin, single-use needles into specific points on the body to stimulate the flow of energy (called Qi) and restore balance. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, Qi flows through channels that connect different organs and systems in the body. When Qi is blocked or disrupted, it can cause illness or pain. Acupuncture aims to unblock or regulate Qi and promote your body’s natural healing ability.
What can acupuncture treat?
Acupuncture has been shown to have benefits for various health conditions, such as:
- Stress Relief: Acupuncture can help reduce stress hormones, lower blood pressure, and calm the nervous system. It can also improve mood and the quality of your sleep.
- Pain Management: Acupuncture can help relieve pain from headaches, migraines, back pain, neck pain, arthritis, menstrual cramps, and more. It can also reduce inflammation and improve blood circulation.
- Digestive Health: Acupuncture can help regulate digestion, ease constipation, diarrhea, bloating, nausea, and other GI issues. A question I get often is, can acupuncture help with weight loss? The answer is YES! Acupuncture can promote weight management by supporting a healthy appetite and boosting metabolism.
- Immune Support: Acupuncture can help strengthen the immune system and prevent or treat colds, flu, allergies, asthma, and other respiratory problems. It can also enhance the effects of vaccines and medications.
- Women’s Health: Acupuncture can help balance hormones, regulate menstrual cycles, improve fertility, ease menopause symptoms, and support pregnancy & postpartum recovery.
- Skin Health: Acupuncture can help improve skin tone, texture, elasticity, and hydration. It can also treat acne, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, and other skin conditions.
How I work with Patients to achieve their health goals
If you’re interested in trying acupuncture, it’s important to find a qualified acupuncturist who has the proper training and credentials. As a Nationally Board Certified and California Licensed Acupuncturist with a Doctorate in Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine and a growing list of Continuing Education training in Internal Medicine and Chinese Herbology, I have extensive training and credentials to support your goals. Here’s how I work best with my patients :
- Consultation: Before booking an appointment, I recommend folks who are new to acupuncture and/or new to my practice schedule a Complimentary 15-minute Consultation where we’ll briefly discuss your primary concern, how I work with patients, and address any questions you have.
- Initial Appointment: At your first appointment, we’ll do a deep dive into your primary concern as well as your health history, health goals, expectations, and any other questions. I’ll also provide you with a proposed Treatment Plan so you can see a roadmap of how we’ll work together.
- Follow Up Treatment: After discussing and agreeing to a Treatment Plan, we’ll follow that plan with periodic re-evaluation to ensure that you are on track to meet your health goals.
- Maintenance: Once we’ve gotten you to your goal, we will move into maintenance which is typically periodic treatments as needed.
- If you have an acute issue such as common cold, plantar fasciitis flare, low back pain or stiff neck flare, you can come in right away to have a treatment to address the immediate issue. I do recommend, once we’ve gotten your pain or illness under control, that we spend time working on the root cause of the issue to prevent it from happening again.
If there’s one piece of advice I would give anyone looking for an acupuncturist, it would be Trust Your Intuition. You should choose an acupuncturist who makes you feel comfortable, respected, and listened to. You should also feel confident in their skills and expertise. Whether we work together or you work with one of my highly respected and recommended colleagues. It is important that you find an acupuncturist that works with you.
